AARON'S JAIL VIDEO AIMS TO RAP UP CRIME
Watching his peers fall into a life of crime has inspired a 16 year old Oxford man to write a rap about the dark consequences of youth violence.
ITV Fixer Aaron Coleman’s rap video was partly filmed in a prison cell and shows the outcomes of both negative and positive lifestyle choices. Aaron’s Fix can be seen on ITV Meridian News at 6pm on Thursday 28 January.
Aaron says: “I wanted to show that a life of crime is not the right path to go down. The main message to it is don’t get involved with the wrong crowd. A lot of young people around me get involved in crime and I just don’t want anyone close to me to get hurt or killed. It’s not fair on the innocent people who just want to get on with their everyday life.”
The video, produced with the ITV Fixers Creative Resources team, will be shown to groups at youth clubs and schools, and Aaron wants to talk face to face with youngsters to get his message across. He says: “A lot of people say they get into crime as they have nothing else to do. The fact is there is always something out there, but a lot of people don’t have the time and effort to look for things to do.”
Chief Inspector Cecilia Agger from Thames Valley Police appears in the broadcast and says Aaron is a great example to other young people. She describes him as “somebody that they can relate to from their own background, their own age group, talking the language they understand through music, through video can give them that message that has a lot more impact, lot more credibility.”
DCI Agger adds that youth knife crime is a major worry for the police. “They could be a victim or ultimately they could lose their life, or they could have a serious injury that is going to have a huge impact. Obviously if they get involved as an offender they could get a crime record and that would limit the sort of opportunities they will have for the rest of their lives.”
